an overwhelming situation where i close my sketchbook. These situations are where the head will burst. Reading a mail of Nicola on graphite, the pencil made up of hundreds of thousands of layers of graphene and its bonding quality stronger than Diamond. The sketchbook tilted as i change from pen to Brush, from imagination to my new obsession of making chairs i see. I go back to the notes of yesterday from the Medical Public library, last night spent testing my eye’s equal innervation, i record my eyes movement. I watch them in slow movement. The flow makes you think the eyes are connected to a central commanding system. So why have two eyes, if both function the same. My feet dont behave like that. Nor my hands typing this blog entry.

My stay in Austin was productive, if a bit confusing. Finding books in the catalog and discovering the full extent of the collection took most of my time. I did get to view a few books and learn about writing manual acquisition at the Ransom Center. I thought I’d be looking at works in the Marzoli and Beaufoy collections of up to 120 + books.

Calligraphy: 1535 – 1885, published in 1962 as a sale catalog of 72 writing manuals was considered the standard for describing this type of book. The Ransom Center acquired the collection in 1962. In 1967, they acquired a collection of scrapbooks called the Beaufoy Collection.

The 2015 Grand Adventure

Rerouing the path:

the starbook

What momentous times! Teaching assignments completed, the year advancing, we are already three weeks into our Grand Adventure before there has been a chance to share it with you. After spending two weeks around family in Norfolk, England, we are enjoying some time with dear friends near Lichfield, Staffordshire before moving on to a sequence of organic farm placements around the UK.


My studio is packed up, my tools reduced to a neat little travel binding kit I contrived in a spectacle case, and my eye and mind are teeming with ideas and nourishment from this complete change of pace and lifestyle.

This is a whole new experience for both of us. Serious travel, not on ‘vacation’ as such, it has been hard to downshift mental and physical pace. Hard to resist my natural propensity to collect, learning to be present with the places and moments empty-handed. I am sketching…
